Venetian Plaster — Sunshine Coast

Venetian plaster is the wow-factor finish — polished, dramatic and unmistakably refined. It gives a room instant character, identity and presence, turning a plain wall into a statement piece that feels more like stone, glass and art than a standard surface. Where Marmorino carries texture, stone and softness, Venetian plaster takes the same ancient roots — lime, marble and hand-applied mineral craftsmanship — and pushes them into a completely different level of precision. As tools became finer and steel trowels allowed tighter compression, artisans were able to grind the marble aggregate finer, apply thinner layers, and burnish the surface to a gloss that earlier textured plasters could not achieve.

This is where Venetian plaster was born.

Its signature is the mirror-like polish that spans across the entire surface. Not just a few shiny patches. Not a soft satin wall. True Venetian plaster is recognised by its depth, clarity and reflection — with very few, if any, low, dull or cloudy spots across the wall.

Although Venetian plaster shares the same lineage as Marmorino, its finer composition gives it a completely different identity. It is applied in multiple ultra-thin layers, each one compressed into the next. Every pass of the trowel remains subtly visible beneath the surface, creating immense depth, movement and creative expression. The finish can feel like polished stone, liquid marble, aged glass or a piece of art built directly into the architecture.

It is also one of the most commonly mislabelled decorative finishes. Many products and applicators use the term “Venetian plaster” loosely, but the easiest way to identify the real thing is the polish. A true Venetian plaster finish should have a consistent mirror-like gloss across the wall, with refined movement and depth beneath the surface.

At Crafted Finishes, we work with both traditional and modern Venetian plaster systems. Traditional lime-based Venetian plaster is made locally in Yandina by Rockcote, carrying the authentic mineral character of lime and marble. We also use modern acrylic and synthetic Italian systems where suitable, which offer longer working time and greater flexibility for more expressive patterns, movement and bespoke design work.
