Marmorino
Marmorino is where a room stops feeling flat and starts feeling alive. Born from an ancient Roman legacy and refined through centuries of Italian craftsmanship, this natural lime and marble finish brings depth, texture and a grounded, architectural calm that paint simply cannot replicate. Tough, breathable and endlessly customisable, it gives you a truly bespoke surface — smooth and satin-like, textured and tactile, softly mottled, subtly polished, richly coloured, or layered with stencils, waxes and protective clear coats. Use it on feature walls, full rooms, ceilings, backsplashes, bathrooms, powder rooms, wine cellars and anywhere you want a natural handmade finish with presence. For showers, countertops and floors, we move to microcement — those areas need a harder-working system built for direct water, impact and wear. Marmorino comes from the Italian word marmo, meaning marble. At its heart, Marmorino is a traditional lime and marble plaster — a finish born from the old Italian way of building, where natural materials were worked by hand to create walls with depth, movement, softness and life. Historically, Marmorino was used throughout Italy, especially in Venetian architecture, as a refined decorative plaster. Traditional formulas were beautifully simple: matured lime putty, finely crushed marble, mineral pigments and the hand of the artisan. The lime gave the finish its breathability and natural mineral character, while the marble brought body, strength, subtle reflection and that unmistakable stone-like depth. Today, Marmorino has evolved into a family of modern lime-based decorative finishes. Some interpretations are smooth and satin-like, others are more textured and earthy. Some are polished to create areas of soft reflection, while others are left matt, tactile and organic. The beauty of the finish is that it does not need to be perfectly uniform. In fact, its imperfection is where its character lives. At Crafted Finishes, one of our favourite products to use is Rockcote Velvetina — a traditional lime plaster made here on the Sunshine Coast by Rockcote, using natural mineral-based materials. Rockcote describes Velvetina as a traditional lime plaster with a natural patina that can be tinted to a wide range of colours.
